In researching for my last post I came across Stardoll. A site where you can dress up your favorite celebrities paper doll style in infinite wardrobes of your choosing. I created an Avril Lavigne doll using outfits from her new clothing line, Abbey Dawn. Talk about genius marketing.
Dress up Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and many more, but with the power to make them fashion disasters at your whim. I think I am enjoying this way too much...

There is something about this utility that has an empowering effect (which is what is clearly intended by whoever designed it). Stars become like play dolls for us, making them feel puppet-like and malleable. Having them within a "tangeable" or "dressable" grasp produces an interesting effect, one that is best described perhaps as demystifying, for normally we can't reach out and touch the "stars." Are stars really stars anymore if they are within reach?
It would be even better if we could make a cartoon like figure out ourselves...that would really put us on all a level-playing field. Would that make us stars, or make them normal people? Neato-fun!
I think you can make your own doll! One that looks like you and then you can put yourself in Avril or Jessica Simp's clothes. I haven't quite figured out that feature yet, but I think that was definitely the websites secondary intention. Primary intention was obviously marketing tie-ins and profit driven.
