Sci Fi Fashions

I think my next band name is going to be "Ubiquitous Unitard." For the most part, these are the iconic ladies of sci-fi that I would have picked as my favorite fashion vanguards.

I have to second that. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to be able to sport the orange wig and white straps. Not to mention 7 of 9 literally saved "Voyager" from cancellation. Her ubiquitous unitard caused dwindling ratings to like double or something.

No kiddin' re: wanting to dress up like Leeloo and bust into a room squealing, "Beepolai!"

But really, I'd love to have any of the Gauthier costumes from that movie.

Wanna join my Ubiquitous Unitard band??

Milla has been one of my style icons since I can remember--we can't forget her stint as Alice of the Resident Evil series (especially Extinction).

Is it any wonder that we can trace a genealogical history of lesbian style icons through sci fi? The trifecta of Ripley, Sarah Connor, and Starbuck send shivers down my oh so underdefined biceps.

And of course, I will join your Ubiquitous Unitard band, but I am not sure it will double our ratings.

Too f**ing funny. It's okay to get this casual on the blog at the end of the semester, right? My brain is unraveling anyway, or at least feels like a pile of dirty laundry on the floor.

But yes, lesbian iconicity + sci fashion seems a logical imbrication.

Here's to underdefined biceps -- it's just water retention, I swear!

I'm in on the unitard band.

Honestly, I think sci-fi is a "safe space" for strong women and alternate sexualities. They aren't threatening to masculinity in an alternate future. Did you guys see that Deep Space 9 episode where that chick who used to be a man in a past life because she was a host to that alien thing in her stomach, hooked up with another woman? Yeah, part of my unconscious 12-year-old lesbian self was definitely thinking "man I want an alien in my stomach too" at that moment. But, it was cool, and not at all threatening because she used to be a man. Nothing homosexual about it. Riiiiiight....

Maybe that is why I am still so drawn to sci-fi? I did spend the last 2 months of my life making a sci-fi lesbian romance for my 508 film. Who knew it all went back to the unitard?
